Adéu a Nihil Obstat | Hola a The Catalan Analyst

Moltes gràcies a tots per haver-me seguit amb tanta fidelitat durant tots aquests anys.

On organized lying: "The really frightening thing about totalitarianism is not that it commits 'atrocities' but that it attacks the concept of objective truth: it claims to control the past as well as the future. The huge system of organized lying upon which dictators depend is quite easy to imagine in a state in which the ruling caste deceives their followers without deceiving themselves. In the past every tyranny was sooner or later overthrown or at least resisted because of human nature which as a matter of course desired liberty. It may be just possible to produce a breed of men who do not wish for liberty as to produce a breed of hornless cows. The Inquisition failed, but then the Inquisition had not the resources of the modern state. A totalitarian society would probably set up a schizophrenic system of thought in which the laws of common sense held good in everyday life and in certain exact sciences, but could be disregarded by the politician, the historian and the sociologist. Already there are countless people who would think it scandalous to falsify a scientific textbook but would see nothing wrong in falsifying a historical fact."

On fear of truth: "To write in plain vigorous language one has to think fearlessly and if one thinks fearlesly one cannot be politically orthodox. If liberty means anything at all it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear. The common people still vaguely subscribe to that doctrine and act on it. In our country it is the liberals who fear liberty and the intellectuals who want to do dirt on the intellect. The sin of all left-wingers is that they have wanted to be anti-fascist without being anti-totalitarian. The common people on the whole are still living in the world of absolute good and evil from which the intellectuals have long since escaped. The whole idea of trying to find out what the average man thinks, instead of assuming that he thinks what he ought to think, is novel and unwelcome. When I sit down to write a book I do not say to myself, 'I am going to produce a work of art.' I write because there is some lie I want to expose, some fact to which I want to draw attention and my initial concern is to get a hearing."
